Lexmark Printer - X9350 review
May 12, 2008
The Lexmark X9350 is a multi-function device that combines a sheet-fed scanner and copier, a color printer and fax, all in a single unit. It is all very well designed, has a small footprint and best of everything that gives the user a choice of three different ways to connect to it; through Wi-Fi, USB or Ethernet.
As soon as you receive the Lexmark X9350 out of the box you realize that someone has spent some time thinking about this product. Since the useful ‘to start’, through the manuals and that the beautiful design, it feels like a well-constructed and well-designed product that could fit into any office or home. Besides its small size (46.5 x 38.4 x 26.9cm) means that should fit anywhere.
The specifications for individual parts of the Lexmark X9350 are all high-end, the Wi-Fi 802.11g uses part, the scanner to scan 48-bit color 1200 x 4800dpi resolution, there is a built-in sheet feeding, there a large, 6cm colour display to view photos from the USB port, PictBridge connector or 7-way digital memory card slots, printer and claims 1,200 x 4800 with 32ppm (pages per minute) in black and white and 27ppm color . As will be seen, however, these figures should be taken to speed with a dish of salt.
The installation is very simple, the installation CD gives you the option to install the printer as a wireless printer, a network printer or as a USB device dedicated. To set it as a Wi-Fi network printer you must first connect through a USB connection to make sure you are pointing to the right network, then disconnect the USB connection and should be and work. Then you need to install driver software on any other wireless-enabled computer that will use the printer.
After choosing the connection loading the software and Lexmark, then loads a setup wizard to establish the basis fax sending and receiving part of a multifunction device. The wizard provides the cover information and how the fax works with other telecommunications devices, such as answering machines and DSL connections. You can then establish information-dialing, blocking junk fax settings and also fax.
The first software supplied with the unit Lexmark is very ropey - that crashed PC we’ve tested that on a regular basis - but once they had upgraded to the latest drivers for the Lexmark site improved things. However, the software Presto PageManager still caused problems, being faster, and we’d recommend that unless you have a machine quickly and at least 1 GB of RAM, you do not bother installing.
Unfortunately another drawback of software that seemed intermittent Wi-Fi. While the connection worked fine initially, we had trouble maintaining the connection and could not get to the bottom of the problem.
In our tests the Lexmark X9350 scanning a typical color to the home page 70dpi in about 25 seconds and leaf feeding could cope comfortably with 40 or more pages of documents. When printing from the PC, a decent quality color copies would have about 55 seconds and printing a file occupies about 60 seconds for the first page and 35 seconds for each page.
Printing directly from the memory card reader or by connecting PictBridge appeared to make little difference, 57 seconds to print a full page in the snapshot print setting, with standard paper, and a full 5 minutes for better image quality on glossy paper.
Quality wise the color printing very good, natural colors and excellent definition and resolution in both color and monochrome documents.
Overall, the Lexmark X9350 is a good quality, however the software is probably too bloated, the speed of claims by the printer could never be met, and 249 pounds the device is expensive. Having said that, there are very few other particularly those in the market that can come anywhere near the X9350 versatility and style.
