HP Printer - Officejet Pro L7780 review
May 17, 2008
HP’s Officejet series is principally geared toward the small to medium business market and the L7780 has some unique features that will specifically appeal to those using network servers to link their workstations together.
Styled in no-nonsense black and silver (a nice change from the usual, rather anaemic cream), this is a solid all-in-one unit measuring 531 x 485 x 444mm and weighing a hefty 26.6kg. It’s clearly designed for volume printing at an economic rate, as it comes with a main input tray holding 250 sheets and a secondary tray beneath holding a further 350.
In addition there’s a duplex unit that attaches to the back and allows for printing on both sides of the paper, as well as an automatic document feeder tray that attaches to the top and can deal with a maximum of 50 sheets.
With a top resolution of 4,800 x 1,200 optimised dots per inch in colour, when printing on HP’s Premium Photo Paper, and up to 2,400 x 4,800dpi when scanning, the results are high quality reproductions. The operation is also fast, with up to 35ppm in mono and 34ppm in colour in draft mode (12ppm and 10ppm respectively in normal mode) and an estimated monthly duty cycle of 7,500 pages. Unfortunately you can’t print or copy any size larger than A4, which might be a restriction for some offices.
The separate front control panel snaps into place (though we’ve never understood why that isn’t pre-fitted before delivery) and each function is clearly separated into the relevant column of operating buttons. There are four separate colour cartridges to cut down on replacement costs and two print-head cartridges which are simple to install, and from then on you either press the appropriate button or make use of the 2.4-inch colour display to work though a range of menu options.
An Ethernet cable is supplied so that you can either connect to your network directly or use it initially to set up a wireless connection with your router. Once established, you can then make use of the innovative Direct Digital Filing feature which swiftly assigns folders on your networked PCs to send scanned documents: they can even be PIN-protected to ward off unwanted intrusions.
In keeping with current trends, there’s also a series of memory card slots built into the front (covering CompactFlash Type I and II, Sony Memory Stick, SD/MMC/Secure MMC and xD-Picture Card) and PictBridge-friendly connectivity via the USB 2.0 port. Photos can either be printed (and edited) directly through the in-built menu or via the supplied HP Photosmart Essential software, which lets you print off a proof sheet first to help you decide which images to process.
