Getac Notebook - V100 review

April 29, 2008

If the portable market niche is robust, rugged Tablet PC is a niche in the wall niche. Elegant messengers come to mind as a profession where pen input is useful, but there is much simpler devices available, so it really comes down to the military, emergency services and agents on the ground.

Getac is a wholly owned subsidiary of MITAC, and specializes in a range of ruggedized laptops. The V100 is a tiny notebook with a 10.4 inches wide and 12.1-inch touch screen, which can be used in the conventional way with a keyboard - waterproofed properly - or as a tablet with his tied, telescopic pen. The screen rotates through 180 degrees and folds down over the keyboard when you want to use the machine as a Tablet PC. The touchscreen works well with the stylus, but is not as sensitive to a finger.

The notebook certainly looks the part, with edges ruggedly to drain cap and body protectors and rubber corner of its frame of magnesium alloy, to avoid beatings. For those who recognize numbers, is compatible with the U.S. military specifications MIL-STD-810F. We were surprised rubber covers numerous shots peripheral got through this, however, as soon as they are a little flimsy, and the shipper had no waterproofing the same as the laptop itself, in fact, could have reached any £ 500 laptops.

Like most portable robust, processing specifications is a bit behind the cutting edge. Based on a 1.2GHz Intel Core, comes with 512MB of memory and 120GB hard drive Sat. This should be OK for running Windows XP, although you may wish to take the memory up to 1GB. In use, the machine performs reasonably quickly, although not try running a game or DVD movie, especially because the V100 does not come with a CD or DVD of any kind. As a reward, there is a PC Card slot that can take two Type IIs or one Type III.

The laptop is well endowed in connection with Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11g WiFi and Bluetooth, so you should be able to link in most networks for which you have permission. There is a 1.3-megapixel Web cam installed, too, can look forward or backward.

Because the notebook is water, there is no access by air cooling, so the whole system has to do without fans. This means that it is silent, but also that the case is given quite hot when the V100 working hard.
