Canon - Selphy ES1 review

Canon - Selphy ES1 review picturesCanon has had considerable success with photo printers and sublimation of the SELPHY ES1 is the second generation model. The company has made a series of changes in the design of the first generation, the most obvious of which were ES1 vertical construction - seems something like a digital radio - and its incorporation of consumables into a single cartridge.

With the Canon dye sublimation to take every impression passes through the printer four times, as layers of cyan, magenta and yellow dyes are transferred from a thin film carrier to white photography. A transparent protective layer is the fourth layer. The dye sublimation film and up to 100 sheets of 15 x 10 centimeters (6 x 4 inches) with photographic paper load a cartridge, which slots at the side of the machine.

When you print an image on the SELPHY ES1, a sheet of photographic paper slide from a slot at the bottom of the machine and then turned through 90 degrees before being fed back to take the first layer dye. This new approach is fascinating to see in action, but is not the only unusual feature of the printer.

Under a small lid on the left side is a miniature USB connector on an extension cable. This connects to latest digital cameras and we tried that HP and Ricoh models, as well as a fee, without any problem. Not having to carry a laptop or around fiddle around with memory cards is a bonus when you want to print pictures quickly.

The buttons at the top of the printer provide a good control of their functions and can be used to navigate the menu system, as well as to preview and manipulate images on the cover-up, 63mm LCD screen. Basic editing, as the cultivation of an image, remove red eye and add effects like sepia or a speech bubble, can be achieved through the control panel, but can connect the printer to a computer to make more detailed changes.

The print quality is excellent, with vivid colors and sharp details, and print speed, just over 70 seconds per print, is also impressive. You can buy cartridges with enough paper and film for 50 or 100 copies and the cheapest option is the pack of 100 printed £ 21. This gives a cost per impression 21p, which is slightly higher than some of the competition, but not excessively so.
